The 1st Uxbridge Scout Troop was founded in 1908, and was
originally registered as the 4th North West Middlesex Troop, and it was the first
Troop to be recognised by the British Government.
In 1910 the King of Portugal paid a State Visit to King Edward VII at Windsor, and by
arrangement with the Commanding Officer at Windsor, the Troop lined the route which the
two Kings had to take, and were the first Troop to form a Guard of Honour to a Foreign
Monarch.
Three months later, King Edward VII dies, and again the Troop lined the route, and werethe
only Scout Troop mentioned. Since these early days of Scouting, the Group has gone from
strength to strength, and now has its full complement of sections. The Wolf Cub Pack was
formed in 1915, the Rover Crew in 1924, and the Senior Troop in 1948, when there was a
change Internationally to divide the Scout Troop into two sections.
The Troop were the first to win the Annual Stilwell Shield for local Scout Troops, and in
fifty years is very proud of the fact that all its scouters have been 1st Uxbridge
trained, and this is reflected in the wonderful spirit of friendship which exists amongst
its members, past and present.
A Fifty Years Celebration Dinner Dance was held on the 19th November, 1958, which was
attended by many former members of the Group, including three Founder Members, and the
first Assistant Scoutmaster, Mr. M. Finch. The function was supported and
attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Uxbridge, Borough Council Officials, representative
of the Middlesex County Scout Association and the Uxbridge Local Scout Association, and
County Councillor R. J. Hughes, of Uxbridge.
